Living with and treating migraine headaches

Stress leads the list of all psychological triggers for migraine headaches and may be the most common migraine trigger of all. Understanding stress and how it effects your life could help you cope better with migraines.


Think of specific things you can add to or take away from your daily routine to reduce stress and help avoid migraine headache pain. Keep a note of the results and discuss them with your doctor.


Get enough rest. One of the best ways to do this is set regular bedtime and waking up times each day so that your body clock regulates itself. It may take 2 to 3 weeks for your body to adapt to this new routine, so it is important to set times and stick with them. Gradually, as your body begins to get used to these times your stress levels should reduce along with the frequency of migraine headaches.


Find an exercise you enjoy and stick with it. Exercise not only fortifies your body, but helps with "resting" your mind. You tend to forget all your worries when exercising. Try mild aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, for 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.


Eat sensibly and have regular meals. Eat foods that are migraine trigger-free for you. Cut down on processed and overly sugary items. To avoid temptation, don’t have them in the house. Keep in mind that processed and sugary foods are not good for your body and can actually increase stress levels.


Headaches can be caused by ordinary foods that most of us eat every day. But cutting out common food triggers from your diet does not mean that you have to sacrifice tasty meals.


When it comes to migraines, decaffeinated coffee, fruit juice and sparkling water are better choices for beverages than caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. If you choose to have an alcoholic drink, stick with single measures and alternate an alcoholic drink with water.


Dairy products can also be common triggers for migraines. Try reducing or cutting out dairy items from your diet for a month to see if this makes a difference to your migraines.


Meats such as corned beef, hot dogs and pickled herring are "cured meats," and contain an ingredient called sodium nitrate, which can trigger a headache. Instead, consider poultry or freshly purchased and prepared meats.


Identify areas of stress in your life and begin working to improve them. Share your problems, concerns, and thoughts with others. Don’t keep them to yourself. Sharing a problem can provide almost instant relief and you may find that others have constructive suggestions for solving issues. Also, have the courage to say "no" to people who place unwanted demands on your time.


Learn how to relax. If you sit down to rest, do not immediately pick up the phone, read a magazine or turn on the TV. Try out relaxation tapes to help you unwind and relax. You’ll find them at most music or bookstores. You can also search the Internet for tapes specifically designed to help prevent migraine headaches.

Treating sleep apnea

Mixing pain medicines is risky for the stomach

Many people as they age take aspirin to help prevent heart attack and stroke. But a recent study found that mixing pain medicines may be risky. It showed that taking aspirin with common pain relievers may harm the stomach. These include Advil® (ibuprofen) and Aleve® (naproxen).


This study looked at health records of close to 50,000 people with pain. These people took over-the-counter (OTC) ibuprofen and naproxen. These drugs are called non-specific nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ns-NSAIDs). The study found that taking aspirin with (OTC) naproxen harms the stomach. The risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers doubled compared to naproxen alone. For ibuprofen, the risk tripled.


"Aspirin raises the risk for stomach problems," said Dr. Joseph Biskupiak. He led the study and is from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. OTC drugs should be taken as directed. "While you can buy them in your drug store, it doesn't mean there's no risk."


The study also showed the harm from use of these ns-NSAIDs alone. The NSAIDs reviewed raised the risk of stomach problems by themselves. Harm to the stomach from ns-NSAIDs has been known for a while. In fact, each year ns-NSAIDs put more than 100,000 people in the hospital for stomach problems. And they've caused the deaths of thousands.


The U. S. Food and Drug Administration asked makers of these drugs to add stronger warnings of serious stomach problems to their labels. The drug makers were also asked to update their labels to include serious skin reactions. They must also explain the potential risk to the heart. All OTC NSAID labels state not to take them for more than 10 days without talking to a doctor.


"Most people don't know that OTCs are serious medicines. They have benefits, but they may have risks too," said Biskupiak.


"I urge people to read the labels of OTC pain drugs. They must take these drugs the right way. Also, they should think twice before taking them with aspirin. People who need pain relief should talk with their doctors about which pain medicine might be right for them."

Pain relief options natural and medical

At some point in our lives, we will experience some sort of chronic pain that we positively hate and wish to go away. But as much as we seek pain relief immediately and despise the discomfort, the truth is that pain is useful to our survival as it alerts us to problems within our body. Oral Pain Relief

Now when most people think of pain relief, the first thing that comes to mind is aspirin or some other form of oral medication. In fact, we have been conditioned to believe that “you take something for the pain” and this usually involves a pill of some kind. For severe or chronic pain, opiates are most often prescribed. Morphine and heroine are two common opiates, and you will generally see cancer patients given these pain medicines as pain relief of last resort. Opiates are considered highly addictive and generally reserved for terminally ill patients.

Anti-depressants once were prescribed solely to treat depression and other mental illnesses. However, recent research has concluded that anti-depressants do relieve certain types of physical pain and are often used in pain relief applications to help a patient sleep.

Anti-seizure medications are prescribed to deal with sharp or acute pain caused by malfunctioning or damaged nerves. They most often deaden or numb the nerves themselves so pain signals do not reach the brain.

Less severe forms of oral pain relief generally come in the form of aspirin or ibuprofen. Ibuprofen are specifically designed to reduce inflammation and are therefore recommended for things like muscle aches while aspirin are more useful on headaches and fever reduction.

One of the more severe but useful types of pain relief come in the form of injections. Cortisone treatments are common in athletes and involve an injection directly into the muscle or nerve causing the pain. This type of pain relief is related to injections but deals with specific nerve blocks within the body. The doctor provides an injection of a specific nerve blocker in order to temporarily relieve pain to that organ or part of the body. Physical Therapy as Pain Relief

Physical therapy is often viewed as a means to rebuild damaged muscles and nerves after a trauma. However, physical therapy is also used as a natural form of pain relief. Surgery

In very severe cases and when other forms of pain relief have failed, surgery may be the last best chance to end chronic pain. Again, this is a method of last resort because as we stated earlier-pain can be useful and necessary to our survival.
