Addicted to oil you bet your lipstick

In his State of the Union speech earlier this year, President Bush said America is "addicted to oil." Correct, but hardly a surprise.

We generally think of oil products as the stuff that powers cars, trucks, SUVs, planes and trains. However, transportation accounts for only about half of the petroleum we use.

What we rarely think of is all the other products in which oil is a key ingredient, such as lipstick. Petrochemicals are also used in the aspirin that relieves headaches and prevents heart attacks, the crayons our kids use - even diapers, DVDs, cameras, bandages, balloons and golf balls.

Three-dollar gasoline is one thing, but consider what our lives would be like without deodorant, perfume or toothpaste (yuck). Can you imagine no vitamins, antiseptic, house paint, syringes, pacemakers, baby strollers, garbage bags, candles or panty hose? (Well, actually, I could do without panty hose.)

But you get my point. Petroleum is used much more in our daily lives than in just filling our gas tanks.

Actually, we're addicted to "foreign" oil. Today we import about 60 percent of our oil and petroleum products-much of it from unfriendly countries such as Venezuela.

There are other options. America has ample reserves of oil and gas but much of it is locked on federal lands. Only Congress can vote to open these lands to exploration. This June, the U. S. House of Representatives passed the Deep Ocean Energy Resources Act to allow exploration in the deep waters off our coasts, while giving states the authority to determine how close exploration is allowed. The Senate, however, is waffling on the terms of the bill.

In May, the U. S. House voted to open just 2,000 coastal acres of the 19 million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil exploration. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates that this area could produce enough oil to supply us with 1.5 million barrels of oil per day lasting 25 years at a minimum. That's enough to replace 30 years of imports from Saudi Arabia-and plenty of lipstick.

The U. S. Senate, however, hasn't voted for a stand-alone bill to open ANWR since 1995, when President Clinton vetoed it.

Being "price gouged" on sunscreen? Thank the U. S. Senate for keeping us addicted to foreign oil.

Adult add and the art of grocery shopping

One of my greatest struggle with sticking to a budget, is that I always overspend what I budget on food. Here are some of my tips to help an Adult with ADD when going Grocery Shopping:

1. Write a menu of what you want to eat for the week. Make sure to include breakfast, lunch, and snacks. There are software products available to help adults with ADD who are more visual thinkers.

2. Based on the menu create a list of what you will need to prepare the items on your menu.

3. Look in your cabinets and refrigerator, for items that are on your list, remove those items from your list. If you go the supermarkets to buy cleaning products or toiletries, you will need to check your bathroom, closets, and if you are like me anywhere else in the house where you put these items. Add items that you are running low on, on to the list.

4. Can you afford the items that are on your list? This will be difficult to determine if this is the first time that you have set a limit for yourself, or if grocery shopping is new to you. Once you have shopped a couple of times with a set limit, you will understand whether your food budget is realistic, or if you will have to make changes to your limit or what you buy. A lot of adults with ADD like to use online services that will deliver the groceries to you. This can be helpful for several reasons; it will total up all you purchases before you make them, it reduce the time of a mundane task, and it helps to control impulse buying.

5. If you are planning to go out shopping, make sure you eat a proper meal before hand. This helps you keep a clear head and reduce impulse buying, by not buying things that you are craving because you are hungry.

6. Have you checked circulars, newspapers or the Internet for coupons for the products that are on your list? This can be dangerous because you might also be tempted to buy additional items that you do not really need.

7. Before you head out decide if you want to go to one store or more than one store. While you can save money by going to additional stores, I would not recommend it. First the additional money and time that you spend traveling could negate any savings that you get. Second it adds a lot of complexity to a task that should be done as simply as possible.

Depression-free lifestyle

Depression as a condition is not the same as the feeling of being depressed from time to time due to certain circumstances. However, some people may already have a mental illness without recognizing it or even if they do, they may still remain in denial. Depression is said to be caused by various factors such as genetics, chemical imbalances in the brain, and stressful events or situations in life. Depression is also a condition that lasts for a long time which primarily differentiates it from occasional feelings of being depressed. It is also an illness, a mental one that needs professional help and should not be attempted to be handled alone without the advice of experts. Depression is a very sensitive condition and any wrong or inappropriate treatment or management applied may immediately worsen the condition or complicate the situation even more. This is the same reason why people who are not diagnosed properly or who do not recognize having this condition are terribly in danger.

There are certain activities and food or supplements, however, that can be done and taken to generally improve any person's mood or state of mind. Basically, changes in mood are governed by the activities of certain chemicals in the brain. Chemicals that are mostly associated with depression are serotonin and norepinephrine. It is, therefore, important to get just the right amount of sleep every time. This way, the right kind of mood is also generated. Knowing the right amount of sleep needed to have the right kind of mood is through observing the changes in one's mood relative the length of hours asleep. In addition, it is said that waking up early is also important because the ultraviolet light of the sun at those hours cause positive effects to the chemistry within the brain.

Exercise and Sun Exposure – It is already well-recognized that exercise produces good outcomes for a person's physical health. Little is known, however, of the positive effects of exercise to one's mental health. According to some studies, exercise increases the amount of serotonin produced in the brain. The more serotonin, the better the mood a person has. Also, some research results indicate that lack of sun exposure does not only cause physical illnesses but also low emotional levels. This is the reason why during winter, when the sun exposure is very minimal, people usually feel fatigue, irritable, and sleepy. Activities that include greater sun exposure, therefore, causes positive effects to one's mental health.

Food Intake and Supplementation – Nutrients needed by one's body is contained in different kinds of food. This is the reason why since childhood, people are taught to eat food that are rich in nutrients like vegetables. For a more concentrated amount of nutrients, one can make use of supplements. There are various kinds of supplements already available nowadays in the market. The important information to remember, however, knows what kind of nutrient that is most needed by the body and what nutrients are directly related to mood enhancement. According to several studies, increasing the amount of vitamins E, B6, B12, and C, folic acid, and magnesium can help improve the state of mind of people with depression. Substances such as St. John's Wort and Ginkgo are also observed to have mood enhancing properties.

Certain situations, however, cannot be managed simply by the techniques stated above. In those cases, use of medications is already inevitable. Well-known treatments for depression are Fluoxetine and Prozac which are only used upon the orders or prescriptions of doctors. Without proper prescription, this can be highly addictive and dangerous to any person. It is, therefore, never advisable to do any kind or form of self-medication and regulation.

Cat fights

Feral or unferal, your kitty may get tangled up in one of these if they are in particular an outdoor cat. Indoor cats if by themselves are obviously not as prone to this risk, unless they find themselves outside, or a stray visitor inside.. but two or more indoor cats can have their "bad" days as well.

If you allow your cat to roam outside in the big wild outdoors, I seriously recommend you take kitty to your veternarian from a young age and start getting him vaccinated! And make sure this is done every year no questions! This is necessary if you don't want your kitty to get infected by nasties like Feline Aids (FIV) which is transmitted through blood while fighting. This also protects your kitty among a lot of other different diseases out there like Feline Leukemia

(FLV). It is also highly advisable to get him (or her) neutered. Unspayed males will fight feirsly for a female if she is in heat, which can leave both cats in tatters and spayed males can find themselves in the middle of something they don't understand if an unspayed males get the wrong idea...

Cats fighting outside at night time can be quite of a shock, as sometimes they can sound close to a child shreking or yelling, and it is definately the last thing you want to hear when your trying to sleep at night! My ultimate way of getting rid of cats engaged in a fight is to turn the hose on them, as noises won't startle them hardly as they are concentrating too much on the other cat!

For indoor cats, obviously water all over the carpet is unwanted so I find usually placing a large object between the two which will cut of eye contact with both cats, if they are engaged in a fight, don't get in their way as cat bites can not only hurt, but are more likely to become infected than dog bites. Use a chair and turn upside down and use the back of the chair and gently slide the chair between the cats, this will startle them and stop them from fighting. Give the cats 'time out' by placing one in a closed room for a short period of time.

A good tell-tale sign if a cat is frightened, the hair will stand up all over the body and when the cat threatens or is ready to attack, you will see the hair stand up in a narrow band along the spine and tail to make him look bigger, and this is also a good time to get out that hose or chair!

With the average lifespan of an outdoor only cat if they are feral or unferal, is only about three years! Which is why if you love your kitty and want him to have a healthy live, keep him indoors and he can live a whopping 16 years longer!

Not only will you benefit from keeping your kitty living longer indoors, it will save you expensive veternarian bills for infected scratches, broken teeth, torn ears, and so on by these nasty one-on-ones.

Classical gas - an enigma of modern music

Classical Gas is one of the most requested and most familiar instrumental pieces of all time. In an episode of The Simpsons called "Last Exit to Springfield" Homer leads the workers of the nuclear power plant in a strike to recover their lost dental plan. While they picket the plant, Lisa plays a bleak worker's song. As she finishes, Lenny shouts, "Play Classical Gas". Lisa plays the guitar and everybody watching the episode on TV goes, "Oh, yeah, THAT tune!" Classical Gas is always asked for whenever a bunch of people and a nylon string acoustic guitar are in the same room. It is not really a great technical showcase for finger style guitarists but it is a great vehicle to show off the sound of the classical guitar.

Classical Gas was released into the world in 1968. A song by The Doors prevented it from turning into a number one hit but it remained in the second place for two weeks. Forty years later it is still among the most familiar tunes of all time and, along with The Anonymous Romance and Leucona's Malaguena regarded as an essential element of the classical guitar repertoire. And nobody can say why.

The impact of Classical Gas is way more than the sum of its parts. There are very few musical ideas in the tune. It is mainly repetition of a theme made up of a few notes. There are a few parts that are unforgettable "surprises" making use of syncopation, scales, strums, and abrupt time signature changes. Somehow all the bits link together like pearls on a necklace, and the final note adds a sublime resolution.

The composer, Mason Williams, states on his website, "I didn't really have any big plans for it, other than maybe to have a piece to play at parties when they passed the guitar around. I envisioned it as simply repertoire or "fuel" for the classical guitar, so I called it Classical Gasoline." Mason Williams' day job was as a comedy writer and stand-up comedian who had lots of other projects besides writing a classical guitar instrumental.

It was Mason Williams' work on the Smothers Brothers' "Comedy Hour" which gave him the opportunity to have his pet composition heard by the American public. The original score of the piece shows only chords and a few notes. Mason Williams had a twenty-three year old composer named Mike Post finish off the arrangement.

At the Grammys it won Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Performance for Mason Williams and Best Instrumental Arrangement for Mike Post who has had a career full of triumphs in the field of TV theme music. His latest victory is the theme(s) for the "Law And Order" series.

Classical Gas has been employed as the theme music for several news programs, the background music for the Apollo 4 movie, and featured in a number of other movies and TV shows. Many people have mistakenly attributed Mason Williams' solo version of the tune for a cover by Eric Clapton.

Classical Gas is quite an easy piece to play, the challenge is to play it with passion and dynamics because it appears to non-guitarists, more difficult to play than it really is. Maybe this is the reason it is among the most requested guitar pieces ever.
